Bandhani Cluster in Kutch

Kutch has traditionally been home to the exquisite ancient art of Bandhani textile dyeing. Today, however, most of the local women have lost touch with the craft. In the course of our maritime and energy projects in the region, we set up a Bandhani training programme in collaboration with the Vivekananda Rural Technology Institute to help revive the tie-and-dye craft.

A group of women gathered at a common house in Mandvi to be trained in the Bandhani technique. 53 women have been trained at the Bandhani centre, and are now able to produce Bandhani textiles and garments commercially.

These women who had been limited to household chores and familial duties now acquired an empowering and fulfilling tool for expression and independence.
